Fairway View care home, based in Bulwell, Nottingham, has started 2020 on a very high note after being rated ‘OUTSTANDING’ by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

Fairway View is the first home operated by Ideal Carehomes to be awarded ‘outstanding’ overall by the CQC and the only residential care home based in Bulwell to be currently ranked as ‘outstanding’.

Following unannounced visits in November last year, Inspectors reported that the ‘culture of the home was visibly person-centred and staff were passionate about providing excellent care’.  Fairway View was also commended for its respect of equality and diversity noting their contributions to celebrate resident’s cultural backgrounds.

After speaking to team members, Inspectors were impressed with the positivity that staff showed towards Fairway View’s parent company, Ideal Carehomes, due to the ‘forward-thinking’ employment initiatives and substantial investment to recognise and reward dedicated and valuable staff whilst helping them to progress in their careers.  The recent successful internal awards programme was also mentioned as a positive scheme for staff and residents.

Inspectors noted staff’s compassion and kindness to ensure they get to know each resident as soon as they move in by completing the ‘This is Me’ initiative which was developed and rolled out by Ideal Carehomes in 2019.  ‘This is Me’ encourages staff to find out about a resident’s life history, likes, dislikes and interests with the help of residents and their families and the information is then used to ‘buddy up’ staff and residents with similar interests to create stronger bonds.

Following the success of ‘This is Me’, staff were able to create clubs for residents based on their hobbies including a ballroom dancing club and a singing club which regularly visits local sister care homes to perform concerts for other residents.

Resident, Mavis Wood, who has lived at Fairway View for two years said: ‘I firmly believe the staff here deserve their ‘outstanding’ rating, they have been absolutely fantastic with me since I moved in. The activities co-ordinators really take into consideration things I like to do. I wanted to create a stall during one of our events to contribute to the resident's fund and the team were more than helpful and made sure it happened, I helped raise over £100’.

Dorothy Mbulo, Home Manager, said ‘We are absolutely ecstatic to be awarded the highest possible rating by the CQC. The team is incredibly enthusiastic and passionate about their roles and continue to go above and beyond ensuring our residents receive top-quality care and activities tailored to them, promoting independence and choice. One example is the ‘wish tree’ that our staff team created for residents and our aim is to grant all of the wishes – this is just one of the many factors that go together to make Fairway View an ‘outstanding’ place to live and work.’

Allison Boyle, Quality Director at Ideal Carehomes, said: ‘The team should be extremely proud of themselves for achieving the first overall ‘outstanding’ within Ideal Carehomes. It is a testament to the hard work I see the team putting in each day making the home an exciting and aspirational environment for our residents and staff – congratulations to everyone involved’
